The summary of this Seccuri Session is that to become a Cybersecurity Superstar, you must have a desire for knowledge.

Our first Seccuri Session was held with Jorge Orchilles, a cybersecurity expert. Jorge is the CTO of Sythe, Principal SANS Instructor,Author & Purple Team Ambassador, former Director of Security in Citi, and he is one of the nicest people you will meet.

A little about Jorge

Jorge has a unique story; he was born with cybersecurity in his blood. He started showing an interest in cybersecurity as a child, wanting to figure out how things worked. He loved video gaming and began hardware hacking by building his own computers for better performance. In high school, he began helping fellow classmates on consulting how to remove malware.

In FIU, he went to a job fair and got a job as a systems administrator in Terremark, and this is the place where he officially got into security. Jorge became interested in the work the security team was doing, and joined the Security Operations Center monitoring and performing incident response for large public and private companies. His career in cyber boomed as he was later hired in Citi Group as an ethical hacker. His team went from 7 people to 160 in 10 years.

Advice from Jorge

Jorge was able to share some advice on how to become a cybersecurity superstar.

Why should you join the cybersecurity talent pool?

• It is a great time to join. The world is experiencing cyberattacks, some that even do physical harm. There has never been a greater need for this talent.
• You are fighting the good fight! Cybersecurity talent help organizations be protected and prevent breaches, and help people as well. It is a feel-good job!
• Cybersecurity is a nice paying career.
• In cybersecurity you learn something new everyday.

What are the top skills you should achieve if you want to become cybersecurity talent? How do you know if cybersecurity is a fit for you?

• Many options for specialization: Cybersecurity is an industry that is fairly new. It has grown immensely during the years and you can join many different specializations, from very technical expertise such asan Ethical Hacker to non-technical roles that are crucial as well, such as RiskManagement
• Thinkers: Cybersecurity needs thinkers! You know you are a fit for cybersecurity if you like to think how things work.
• Passion: You must enjoy cybersecurity. You will be living it every day.
• Start playing around: Understand what interests you! There are many resources where you can learn topics in cybersecurity and understand what you are mostly interested in. There are different learning sources.
• Stop thinking about joining cybersecurity and start learning!
• Ignore the Impostor syndrome:  Impostor Syndrome is very common in cybersecurity according to Jorge. His advice is – ignore it, as everyone in cybersecurity, even people that have been working in cyber for years, are learning something new everyday.
• Have a desire to learn: Desire to learn and always grow is the biggest requirement for cybersecurity.  

We finished the Seccuri Session by learning that even an expert is constantly learning new cybersecurity topics. Jorge has been studying the new MITRE ATT&CK and digging deeper into security in Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence.
