Pedro Adamović: how Latin America's top CISOs thrive in disruptive environments

With the rapid advances of the digital era, Latin American countries have spent the past few years developing to face the challenges of becoming an information society. These challenges rest on establishing and embracing public policies that drive them toward integration with the global digital ecosystem, adopting new technologies and agile methodologies that maximize the development of different economic sectors, and facing the constant cyber threats that emerge from digital interconnectivity. One of the key players in this transformation is the role of the CISO, better known as Chief Information Security Officer.

Pedro Adamović is currently one of the most recognized CISOs in all of Latin America. Since the start of his career as a Systems Engineer graduated from Universidad Abierta Interamericana (UAI), he has focused on using his communication skills to develop awareness plans centered on the realities and challenges of information and physical security, and on getting his teams to work together in support of business continuity.

His broad influence over teams and his technical knowledge quickly led him to become, at just 29 years old, CISO of Banco Itaú Argentina, a position in which he took on leadership of areas critical to the institution's operation, including Information Security and Security Control and Monitoring. Later, he moved to the role of CSO at Nación Servicios, where he was part of the Executive Committee and was in charge of Cybersecurity, Physical Security and Business Continuity for the SUBE card, best known as the only payment method that allows Argentines to travel across the country's integrated public transportation system. Pedro is currently part of the executive team at Galicia, one of the main banks in Argentina's financial system, where he has served as CISO since 2019.

Through his leadership in defining, implementing and controlling Security Policies and Strategic Plans, as well as continuous cyber risk assessment and organization-wide awareness campaigns, Adamović has helped amplify the progress that institutions like Galicia have made in adopting cybersecurity best practices to develop and strengthen their digital transformation capabilities. His challenges have been clear: facing a global landscape where cyberattacks are growing exponentially against critical infrastructure such as financial institutions, and where stakeholders expect to receive more value from organizations through agile and secure products, services and processes.

Argentina in particular has gone through an interesting trajectory in the development of its digital environment and cyber capabilities. According to a report by the Ministry of Modernization of the Presidency of the Nation (Argentina), in 2016 the country recorded losses of more than 5.4 billion dollars from cyberattacks. Most of its organizations lacked cybersecurity strategies to address these threats, let alone the budget to strengthen their technology and information security teams in identification, protection, detection, response and recovery capabilities. The frequency and sophistication of incidents against computer systems increased drastically, and little was said in boardrooms and government entities about the need to strengthen the cyber resilience of critical infrastructure systems.

Today, the country's landscape has changed drastically thanks to the joint work of public and private entities that have worked to bring Argentina to a new, strong position in terms of digital and cybersecurity maturity. CISOs like Pedro Adamović have joined this challenge from their management roles, helping their organizations prepare through greater investment in new technologies, human resources and awareness.

In Pedro's case, his leadership has been evident in Galicia's transformation. His efforts are reflected in the organization's cultural shift in favor of cybersecurity, greater support from the Board of Directors, and a significant bet on turning employees into specialized experts across the different areas of information security, with the support of new technologies and the adoption of agile methodologies. His extensive background and experience have made him an international speaker, and he has stood out for leading important cybersecurity teams. He has also earned important worldwide recognition over several consecutive years, including being named to the "Top 100 CISOs Worldwide" list in 2020 and 2022 by the UK company Hottopics, the "Cybersecurity Leadership Award" from the Global Security Summit, "CISO of the Year Argentina 2023" from CIONET Iberoamérica, and the Cyber Innovation Award at Fintech Americas Miami 2023.
